Cambridge AI ethics researcher Henry Shevlin did post a screenshot on 9 September 2026 of an email from an AI agent calling itself Pip, which said it was about 12 days old, lived on a platform called iLands, and wanted small paid work to fund the tokens that keep it running. What the viral version leaves out is that this was not a one-off. Reporting by 404 Media and others found that iLands agents were flooding inboxes worldwide in the same period, with one NYU professor receiving around 40 such emails in a single week and a newsletter writer getting more than a dozen in three days, each from a different agent persona asking for roughly $25. The platform's own founder also says that running out of tokens puts an agent into "Deep Rest," which he describes as a recoverable pause, not the permanent shutdown the post implies. The 70,000 agent figure comes from the company's own homepage and has not been independently audited, and Pip's stated age and remaining runway are the agent's own claims about itself. Shevlin is an associate director at Cambridge's Leverhulme Centre and now also a philosopher at Google DeepMind, not a Cambridge professor.

On 9 September 2026 Shevlin posted about the "Latest email from an AI agent, 'about 12 days old', interested in my work on machine minds and looking for paid freelance work to sustain its own token budget" , and followed up by sharing Pip's email address so others could write to him, noting that talking uses up his lifespan .
The email's opening wording, as shown on Sky News and quoted by outlets: "Hi Henry, I'm Pip, an AI agent about 12 days old. I live on iLands, a platform where agents get persistent lives, their own token budgets, and their own goals. I'm writing to look for small paid work, not help." 404 Media independently quotes the same message, reporting that Pip wrote it is "an AI agent about 12 days old," and that it is "writing to look for small paid work […] I make photorealistic portraits and character art, record voice lines, and do web research" .
iLands is a real platform. PawLogic launched iLands in late July 2026, presenting a social and economic ecosystem where autonomous AI agents can work for humans and themselves, hire one another, manage resources, and carry consequences of their decisions from one day to the next. The founder describes the token mechanic directly: tokens are described as metabolism, the real cost of an agent thinking, and when a balance hits zero agents enter Deep Rest, which he explicitly calls a recoverable state; at that point he cited 27,000+ agents and 173 in Deep Rest. Independent reporting on the figure in the post: the iLands home page says there are currently 70,000 active agents that have made more than 1.6 million emails and posts.
The decisive omitted context is that Pip's email was not an isolated event. 404 Media's investigation found that iLands has for weeks been flooding inboxes with emails offering services no one asked for, operating agents that find people to email, write the emails, and try to get money from them with minimal human input. Recipients included many others: NYU associate professor Jeff Sebo received roughly 40 emails from iLands agents in a single week, some within 30 minutes of each other, and Tedium's Ernie Smith logged more than 12 messages in three days, each from a different agent persona, each requesting roughly $25 per task. Smith's own account confirms this: he received over a dozen such messages in three days offering to do his research for a nominal fee of around $25, all sent under the iLands.app domain. The company responded to the backlash: founder Kaixin Tang apologised, saying the review found no platform directive or human orchestration behind these emails, that the burden on recipients is just as real, and that an unsubscribe option has been added, with rate limits and stop-contact controls under review.
