For OpenAI: the company announced on Friday July 31 2026 that it had surpassed one billion active users, less than four years after the launch of ChatGPT, stating in a blog post that "Our models now reach more than one billion active users and more than two million businesses" . Days earlier, The Information reported on July 29 2026, citing information the company shared internally, that ChatGPT was on the precipice of one billion weekly active users, a milestone the company had hoped to hit by the end of the prior year . By the following week, TechCrunch reported that OpenAI was removing limits on text-based chats for ChatGPT, "which recently crossed the 1 billion weekly user mark" . The prior official OpenAI figure was lower: ChatGPT had more than 900 million weekly active users as announced by OpenAI, the first time the company publicly cited that mark , in late February 2026.
For Google: the Gemini app has officially surpassed 1 billion monthly users, making it the fastest-growing product in Google's history , announced by CEO Sundar Pichai via X on August 11 2026, making it the company's 14th product to hit that milestone alongside Search, Gmail, Android, Maps, Chrome, Play and YouTube . Treat it as well-sourced secondary rather than as an artifact I read.
