"NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang tweeted that GPT-6 Astra, trained on over 100,000 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVLink72 GPUs, represents the arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI), with 400,000 more GPUs coming online next."

HighSummary
Jensen Huang really did post this. On September 6, 2026, the NVIDIA CEO wrote on X that GPT-6 Astra was trained on "~100K+ NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVLink72," that "AGI has arrived," and that 400,000 GPUs are coming online next. So the quote is genuine, and GPT-6 Astra is a real OpenAI model released on September 3, 2026. What the post leaves out is the context. OpenAI itself did not declare AGI: its president said the AGI era had begun and that he personally believes it, while explicitly leaving the judgment to users. The compute figure comes only from the man who sells the chips, OpenAI has not published it, an earlier version of his post said 300,000 before being deleted and reposted, and it is unclear whether he meant 100,000 chips or 100,000 racks. The benchmark score most often cited alongside the AGI framing drops from 99.9% to 62.7% on the same model when the benchmark's own testing setup is used, and the benchmark's operator says it is not claiming this is AGI. Huang also said similar things in March 2026 and on NVIDIA's August 2026 earnings call, so this is not a new position for him.

Why this verdict
Evidence
The post exists and the quotation is close to verbatim. Huang's post reads: "GPT-6 Astra, trained on ~100K+ NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVLink72. From ChatGPT to o1 to Astra in 4 years. AGI has arrived. Congratulations @OpenAI team. 400K GPUs coming online next."
It was posted at 8:41 PM on Sep 6 as a reply to Crusoe CEO Chase Lochmiller, who had written "Congratulations to our friends at @OpenAI! I guess this makes Abilene the birthplace of AGI!"
The underlying release is real. GPT-6 Astra was initially released to approved users on September 3, 2026, with general availability the following day , and OpenAI describes it as available in the API as gpt-6-astra and through Microsoft Azure and Amazon Bedrock .
OpenAI did not make the claim Huang made. OpenAI president Greg Brockman called Astra a "generational leap" and said it could eventually be seen as the arrival of AGI, saying he personally believes OpenAI has reached AGI while leaving users to decide whether Astra meets that definition.
Nvidia's CEO said AGI has arrived after OpenAI released Astra; OpenAI described Astra as fast and versatile but did not claim it had achieved AGI, and experts note AGI lacks a clear test, making the claim hard to verify.
The benchmark evidence most often cited alongside the AGI framing is harness-dependent. The benchmark operator itself reports that GPT-6 Astra scores 62.7% on ARC-AGI-3 Semi-Private with its Standard harness and 99.9% with a Provider Adapter harness that preserves opaque reasoning state between requests . ARC Prize chief François Chollet does not call this proof of AGI, though he sees progress running "twice as fast" than expected .
The compute figure has a documented wrinkle. Huang's first version of the post cited 300,000 systems; he deleted it and reposted the smaller figure, and Nvidia has not explained the change. The unit is also ambiguous: if he meant 100,000 racks, that is 7.2 million GPUs, far beyond any training cluster ever described; if he meant 100,000 GPUs arranged in NVL72 racks, that is about 1,400 racks, a large cluster but a plausible one . Nvidia had not clarified the wording at the time of publication.
On the caption's secondary claims: Huang has said versions of this before. In a March 2026 interview he argued that artificial general intelligence is effectively here , and on the August 26, 2026 earnings call he was more measured, saying "for many tasks, we could say that we've already achieved AGI" before pivoting to economics . On Mark Gubrud, he coined the term in 1997 as a graduate student at the University of Maryland , and in March 2026 he posted that "we have achieved AGI. Current models perform at roughly high-human level in command of language and general knowledge, but work thousands of times faster than us. Still some major deficiencies remain but they're falling fast."
Findings
✓ What's accurate 7
- Jensen Huang did post this on X on September 6, 2026, from his verified account, as a reply to Crusoe CEO Chase Lochmiller.
- The post does contain the words "AGI has arrived" in direct connection with GPT-6 Astra, and does congratulate the OpenAI team.
- The post does state "~100K+ NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVLink72" as the training hardware.
- The post does state "400K GPUs coming online next."
- GPT-6 Astra is a real, released OpenAI model, launched September 3, 2026.
- The caption's statement that AGI has no single agreed definition is correct and is the point most commentators made.
- The caption's characterization of Mark Gubrud is substantially correct: he coined the term in 1997 and has publicly said current models have achieved AGI while major deficiencies remain.
≈ What's misleading 7
- **Marketing as evidence:** the claim presents a compute figure that comes solely from the CEO of the company that sold the hardware, in a post promoting that hardware. No OpenAI publication of Astra's training-cluster size was located, so "trained on over 100,000 GPUs" is an interested party's unverified assertion presented as an established fact about the model.
- **Omitted qualifier:** the claim and caption omit that OpenAI itself did not declare AGI. Its president said the AGI era had begun and that he personally believes it, while explicitly leaving the determination to users. Presenting Huang's declaration without that contrast implies a settlement that the model's own maker declined to assert.
- **Capability extrapolation:** the caption's framing treats a four-word social-media declaration as a position in a technical debate. The declaration rests on no published test, and the benchmark most often paired with it swings from 62.7% to 99.9% on the same weights depending on the harness, with the benchmark's own operator refusing to call the result AGI.
- **Unit ambiguity in the compute figure (plain-language finding):** Huang wrote "100K+ NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVLink72," which can be read as 100,000 GPUs arranged in NVL72 racks or as 100,000 NVL72 racks, which would be roughly 7.2 million GPUs. The claim resolves this silently to "GPUs." That is the plausible reading, but NVIDIA has not clarified it, and the claim presents a resolved number where the source is ambiguous.
- **Omitted qualifier:** the claim does not mention that an earlier version of the post gave 300,000 rather than 100,000 and was deleted and reposted, with no explanation from NVIDIA. That is material to how much weight the figure can carry.
- **Framing a repeated position as new (plain-language finding):** the caption says Huang is "now openly calling" Astra AGI, which "puts one of tech's biggest names firmly on that side." He argued AGI was effectively here in March 2026 and said on the August 26, 2026 earnings call that for many tasks we could say AGI is already achieved. The position is not new, and TechRadar's coverage described this as him doing it "once again."
- **Date context mismatch:** the caption presents Gubrud's remark as if it belongs to the Astra news cycle. His statement was made in March 2026, in response to an earlier Huang claim, not about GPT-6 Astra.
? What's uncertain 5
- Whether OpenAI actually trained GPT-6 Astra on more than 100,000 Grace Blackwell GPUs. No OpenAI disclosure of the figure was found, and the only source is Huang.
- The exact unit Huang meant, GPUs or NVL72 systems. NVIDIA has not clarified.
- Why the first version of the post said 300,000. This rests on BeInCrypto's reporting as relayed by TheStreet and Yahoo Finance; I did not retrieve an archived copy of the deleted post.
- Whose 400,000 GPUs are "coming online next," and on what timeline. The post does not specify, and no official NVIDIA or OpenAI document confirming that deployment was located.
- Whether GPT-6 Astra meets any AGI definition. This is definitional and not resolvable by evidence. Different definitions yield different answers, which is the substance of the dispute rather than a gap in the record.
